Dr Zahidul Islam has been working in the fields of legal education, research, legal practice and consultancy since 2003. Before becoming a full time academic in the Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB) in February 2021, he had been in legal practice for 15 years at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh where he practiced in different areas including constitutional and administrative laws, human rights laws, and family laws in Bangladesh.
Dr Islam had served as a law and governance researcher and as a legal consultant in various national, regional and international organizations including National Board of Revenue (NBR), Cabinet Division of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), British Council, UNDP, UNICEF, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JAICA), and DFID.
Dr Islam, as an adjunct faculty, has taught at Jahangirnagar University, Notre Dame University, Northern University of Bangladesh and Canadian University of Bangladesh. He also worked as a research fellow at National Law University of Delhi and the Centre for Women’s Studies at Biswa Bharati University, India.
Dr Islam obtained a PhD in Law from the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India, in 2012. He also did his M Phil in Law and Governance from the same institution in 2009. He completed his graduation, LLB (Honours), and LLM (Human Rights Law) from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
