IUB celebrates ‘Nazrul Jayantee’ – 120th birth anniversary of the National Poet

The greatness of the national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam is not limited only within his songs, poetry, drama or other cultural magnificence. He has had modern and liberal idealism and unsurpassed philosophical archetypes for all. At this point in time, his idealism and philosophy need to be unfolded by each and everyone to overcome obstacles and establish peace and prosperity in the society. Guests and speakers highlighted all this to mark the 120th birth anniversary of Bangladesh’s national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on Thursday, June 27, 2019. The event was organized by The Department of English and Modern Languages at IUB and Kazi Nazrul Islam-Abbasuddin Ahmed Research and Study Centre.
Mr. Asaduzzaman Noor, MP graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of IUB’s ‘Nazrul Jayantee’ celebration. Ms. Khilkhil Kazi, the granddaughter of the Poet was also present as Special Guest while the National Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman presided over the program. Prof. Milan Pagon, Vice Chancellor (Acting), IUB was also present and spoke in the event.
During the celebration, the book titled, ‘Kazi Nazrul Islam: Poetry, Politics, Passion’, edited by Prof. Niaz Zaman, Advisor, Department of English and Modern Languages at IUB was launched by Mr. Asaduzzaman Noor MP, Dr. Anisuzzaman and other guests. The Chief Guest stated that presently, extremism and impatience prevails everywhere. Thus, he recommended to be acquainted with Nazrul’s creations to succeed. Ms. Khilkhil Kazi urged the new generation to follow Nazrul’s ideology and thereby create their own path. Dr. Anisuzzaman revered Nazrul for his patriotism, non-communal and humanitarian ideology. The celebration included more speeches by scholars namely, Prof. Mohitul Islam and Ms. Devjani Sengupta, Nazrul Researcher, West Bengal, India. Mr. Towhid Bin Muzaffar, Head, Department of English and Modern Languages delivered vote of thanks.
Later part of the celebration included colorful cultural show compered by Ms. Sadya Afreen Mallick, Nazrul Awardee. Including Sadya Afreen Mallick, Yasmin Mushtari and other prominent singers performed Nazrul songs on the day. Recitations from Nazrul’s writings by the students of IUB’s Bangla Language Institute, dance and other cultural activities were also performed. The national level celebration of Nazrul Jayantee at IUB was enjoyed by the honorable Trustees of IUB, Deans, members of the faculty and administration, students and distinguished guests.
