IUB celebrates International Women’s Day

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) celebrates International Women’s Day 2017 upholding this year’s theme of the day, ‘Be Bold for Change’. The day was marked through different events and activities at IUB’s own campus in Bashudhara, Dhaka.
To observe International Women’s Day in befitting manner, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS), IUB arranged Programs where Prof. M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, IUB was present as the Chief Guest. In his speech, Prof. Rahman said, “Since its inception in 1993, IUB is extending all-out support for the female students so that they can materialize their dreams and be empowered to prosper the nation.” In this connection, Prof. Rahman stated that without equal participation of women, no nation can succeed. He urged upon all concerned to take initiatives and ensure facilities so that participation of women in higher education gets enhanced.
Pointing out the socio-economic scenario of Bangladesh where dowry, acid throwing, women trafficking, etc. are very common; Prof. Milan Pagon, Pro-Vice Chancellor of IUB emphasized on the importance of celebrating this day. Dr. Mahbub Alam, Dean of SLASS delivered welcome speech in the program. Among others Towhid Bin Muzaffar, Head, Department of English and Modern Languages; G. M. Shahidul Alam, Head, Department of Media and Communication; Dr. Talim Hossain, Head, Department of Social Science and Humanities; Dr. Imtiaz A. Hussain, Head, Global Studies and Governance Program; Prof. Niaz Zaman, PhD, Advisor, Department of English and Modern Languages; and Razia Sultana Khan, PhD, Professor, Department of English and Modern Languages also spoke on the occasion. A huge attraction of this program was the exclusive performance of traditional Dhamail Musical Dance performed by a specialized women group of Srimangal.
To celebrate the day, another program was jointly organized by the School of Life Sciences and the Office of the Vice Chancellor that screened Oscar-nominated film ‘Hidden Figures’. The film highlights the contribution of African-American female mathematicians who worked at NASA.
Deans and Heads of different Schools and Departments, senior members of the faculty and management and a large number of IUB students attended various events of International Women’s day 2017.
