IUB celebrates International Women’s Day 2018

To celebrate the International Women’s Day 2018, the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organized a Seminar on `Press for Progress: Achieving Gender Equality in the Academia’, and an exclusive presentation of Monipuri Raas Dance on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at IUB campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka.
Professor Sadeka Halim, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Dhaka University was the Keynote Speaker of the Seminar. The program started with a welcome address given by Dr. Mahbub Alam, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences of IUB.
Thanking Prof. Halim for enlightening the students and the faculties of IUB, Chief Guest Prof. M. Omar Rahman, Vice Chancellor of IUB mentioned, `currently about 40 per cent members of the faculty at IUB are female and the management is endeavoring to increase the number’.
Highlighting major aspects of gender equality in academia, in her Keynote presentation, Prof. Halim stated that there should be political voice and platform for women and the participation of women needs to be enhanced in decision making processes. `Here, we also have to bring the quality, and not the quantity merely’, she added.
Ms. Mahbuba Dewan, Lecturer, Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, IUB, introduced the Speaker and Mr. Obydullah Al Marjuk, Senior Lecturer of the same Department delivered vote of thanks. Deans and Heads of different Schools and Departments, senior members of the faculty and management and houseful IUB students attended this very significant and educative Seminar that ended with a lively question-answer session.
Afterwards, ‘Monipuri Raas Nritya: Celebrating Ethnic Women’s Right of Passage’ mesmerized the whole audience. A 12-member team from Moulavibazar, Sylhet performed very exclusive dances to tribute the women.
