IUB Celebrates International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day 2016 was celebrated by the Department of English, SLASS, IUB. A day long program of readings and songs was organized on Thursday, 08 March 2016. A variety of texts written by women, for women and about women were presented by faculty, members of the IUB administration and students. The idea was to raise awareness of the plethora of literature by women that is often overshadowed. Some of the writers among those showcased were Rabindranath Tagore, Sylvia Plath, Maya Angelo and Jhumpa Lahiri. Mr Towhid Bin Muzaffar, Head of the Department of English and Department of Modern Languages, welcomed everyone. Among those who read were Dr Niaz Zaman, Advisor, Department of English, Dr Razia Sultana Khan, Professor, Department of English, Mr Tapos Sarkar, the Controller of Examinations, Ms Lima Chowdhury, Deputy Director, Admissions & Financial Aid Office, Ms Sharmeen Islam, Assistant Director, Career Guidance & Placement, and Dr Nazneen Islam Khan, Sr. Financial Aid Officer. A number of faculty members from SLASS and students from different schools of the university also participated. The day long event ended with a cultural function put on by the students of IUB. Songs, skits and readings were presented and the day long event culminated in a spectacular “fire dance.”
